Foreword from the Secretary-General of the Commonwealth
The Commonwealth is deeply committed to supporting our member states, particularly small island developing states (SIDS), in strengthening their resilience against natural disasters. SIDS are on the frontlines of climate change, facing disproportionate risks from rising sea levels, extreme weather events, and other hazards that threaten their communities, economies, and unique ecosystems.
Recognizing the urgent need for action, the Commonwealth is working hand in hand with SIDS to build their capacity to anticipate, prepare for, and recover from disasters. We are leveraging our convening power to facilitate knowledge-sharing, technical assistance, and access to climate finance, enabling SIDS to invest in resilient infrastructure, early warning systems, and nature-based solutions.
Climate change poses an existential threat, but the way we respond to the crises it creates can help us to build back better, creating a safer, more sustainable, and more prosperous Commonwealth for generations to come
The Rt Hon Patricia Scotland KC
Secretary-General of the Commonwealth
